 <\/p>\n

We lie down in the shadows of oaks
\nStretch in the sun’s
\nCool fingerprints
\nAnd imagine, if only for a moment
\nFleeting as bird on branch
\nThat we’re immortal \u2013
\nThe honored know better<\/p>\n

To erase cancer
\nIs like a parent trying
\nTo take back their child’s name
\nImpossible without time travel
\nOr some dark miracle
\nWe can’t wish on the sick
\nWho are we to unmake what’s always been?
\nIf we shook loose the sky
\nWould not something darker still remain?
\nWe say no, only sound \u2013
\nOur pounding feet
\nThe force of will of thousands<\/p>\n

Now on the eve of it all
\nWe lay restless, dreaming
\nUnder our tired eyes
\nWe wonder where we’ll fail
\nGather ourselves as if we might die
\nAnd wake inside the thick
\nBreath of our race<\/p>\n

Beside the salt water we bleed
\nAlready glistening, rising, and black
\nThat trigger has pulled a thousand times
\nThe world goes quiet and roars back
\nEchoes of teams before
\nAnd times when arsenic was new
\nAround hot corner and the climb
\nout of the basin: winded,
\ncandy-colored, tricked-out, barreling
\nFlowing in and spilling out
\nFootfall upon footfall
\nFalling softly, softly \u2013
\nCalling across the great lawns
\nCalling upon doubts, eons
\nDawn after marvelous dawn<\/p>\n

Whoever we are on this day
\nThe honored have dissolved into us
\nLike ink in skin
\nAnd like silt into a great river
\nCancer\u2019s own weight betrays it
\nAnd this warm morning we forget
\nIf only for a moment,
\nIts name<\/p>\n

\n “the honored” – they’re the survivors of blood related cancers who inspire us, and train with us for races<\/span>
\n “arsenic” – a very old cancer treatment, believe it or not<\/span>
